"Since Daniel launched the business in September 2017 he has gone from strength to strength and built up the business with lots of hard work and dedication. He has now established himself with a number of local businesses as their first port of call and is always on 24 hour standby."
Daniel Higgins came to ROAD (Reaching Out Across Durham) after hearing about the support they could offer to people that were currently experiencing times of hardship. Daniel had been a carer for a number of years, but had made the decision to make positive changes to his life, allowing him the freedom to be his own boss. Dan had heard about ROAD and the different support services they offered people that weren’t currently in employment. ROAD is a three year programme delivered throughout County Durham and funded through the Big Lottery Fund and European Social Fund. The aim of the programme is to help people within the local community furthest from the jobs market get the best support to enable them back into Training, Education and Employment. Daniel came to ROAD looking for support with training, financial information and guidance and with the idea of setting up his own business. Whilst working with his Navigator, Alasdair from Changing Lives, Daniel explored the idea of self-employment. This would allow him to maintain his care responsibilities, but also bring in more money to the household. Daniel explored different avenues before deciding that he wanted to find out more about becoming a 24 hour locksmith. With ROAD’s support Daniel sourced funding to take up the training required. He then met with Anderson from CDC Enterprise Agency in Chester-le-Street who provided him with all the tools and support to get into business. Jane worked with Daniel to create a business plan, access support around marketing and business finance as well as registering with HMRC. Since Daniel launched the business in September 2017 he has gone from strength to strength and built up the business with lots of hard work and dedication. He has now established himself with a number of local businesses as their first port of call and is always on 24 hour standby. Daniel had this to say about ROAD ‘Without the opportunities ROAD provided me, I wouldn’t have know where to begin. Jane and Alasdair guided me through all the channels and have been a huge help in me make this move into Self-Employment. I will always be very grateful for their support. I would recommend ROAD and all of their support to others in a similar position to me.’
