Legacy & Funders

Building Better Opportunities Programmes are jointly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and the European Social Fund as part of their investment in local projects that tackle the root causes of poverty and promote social inclusion.

The Building Better Opportunities Strand of the ESIF strategy identifies four core themes, all of which are addressed through ROAD.

  • Multiple barriers to employment
  • Health inequalities
  • Digital inclusion
  • Financial inclusion

The National Community Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects.

In 2017/18, the National Lottery Community Fund awarded over £500 million, and 90% of their grants were under £10,000. The National Lottery Community Fund Annual Report 2017/18 can be found here:

The Building Better Opportunities project has received up to £300 million of funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and the European Social Fund as part of the 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme in England. The Department for Work and Pensions is the Managing Authority for the England European Social Fund programme. Established by the European Union, the European Social Fund helps local areas stimulate their economic development by investing in projects which will support skills development, employment and job creation, social inclusion and local community regenerations.  For more information click here.
